Religion in Kazan The Sunnite Islam appeared in the territory of Tatarstan in the beginning of the 10th C; at present, it is confessed by half of the population of the Republic - the Tatars and the Bashkirs. The Orthodox Christianity appeared in the middle of the 16th C after collapse of the Kazan Khanate; it is shared by the other half of the population - the Russians, the Chuvashes, the Mari, the Udmurts, the Mordvinians, and a small part of the Tatars. Kazan is a city of unusual destiny, which played a great role in history. Thousands of threads are connecting the city with neighbouring and faraway countries, turning it into a crossing point of different civilizations and religions and the centre of various cultures. Thus, Kazan is the symbol of united culture of great variety. Religion today is an important factor, which defines spiritual life of the city. Religious situation in multinational Kazan more or less reflects the consequence of those main changes both in the State and Political system, which took place during the last decades. Religious relations are based on liberty of conscience, which implies equality before the law for all religions and the person's right of professing any religion. Nowadays 153 religious organizations, including 68 Muslim, 48 orthodox ones and others, which are not traditional for Tatarstan, are functioning in Kazan. There are 67 cult buildings at the confessions' disposal, and 32 of them are the monuments of history and architecture. There are four theological institutions of higher education in Kazan, namely The Kazan Theological Seminary, the Islamic University of Russia, the Higher Muslim Medrese (Religious School) "Mukhammadia" and the Higher Muslim Medrese, named after 1000 anniversary of Islam adoption. Besides, there are 20 medreses at mosques, 9 Sunday Schools at Orthodox temples, 6 Protestant Schools, 1 Old-Belief and 2 Jewish schools with extensive learning of Jewish ethnic culture. Education in Kazan Compulsory ten-year secondary education starting from the age of seven. 0.2 per cent of the total amount of schoolchildren is enrolled in non-state comprehensive day-schools. More than 50,000 students are getting comprehensive vocational training in 70 state comprehensive vocational schools. Tatarstan has 19 state institutions of higher education (including subsidiaries) with 65,200 students. 2,400 students are being educated in seven non-state institutions of higher professional education. Kazan institutions of higher education include Kazan University, one of the oldest universities in Russia (founded in 1804), Medical, Technical, Technological and Teachers-Training universities, Academy of Architecture and Construction, Veterinary Academy, Academy of Agriculture, Academy of Culture and Arts, Conservatoire, Institute of Finance and Economy, etc. Over last years considerable attention has been focused on specialist training in compliance with the requirements of modern market economy.

Sport in Kazan The Government of Tatarstan and the City Administration pay a lot of attention to sports in Kazan. This activity also implies renovation and construction of sport arenas, thus, making achieve great results in the republican and All-Russia competitions as well as international championships. There are 1185 sport centers in Kazan, including 300 gyms, 16 swimming pools, 15 ski pavilions, and 44 sport schools, where more than 29 thousand children, teenagers and young people can train in 38 different sports
