Kazan (Russian: Êàçàíü; Tatar: Qazan, Êàçàí) is the capital city of Tatarstan and one of Russia's largest cities. It is a major industrial, commercial and cultural center, and remains the most important center of Tatar culture. Kazan lies at the confluence of the Volga (Idel) and Kazanka (Qazansu) rivers in central European Russia.

Population: 1,105,289 (2002 census, 48% Tatars and 43% Russians)

Located in: European Russia, capital of Tatarstan

Administrative system: The main body of legislative authority of the city is the City Council. Executive power is exercised by Kazan City Administration.
